Ferrymead’s rich history is deeply tied to its location between Christchurch and the port of Lyttelton. Early pioneers transported goods over the steep Bridle Path, from Lyttelton to Heathcote, before using punts to cross the river into Christchurch. Later, maritime traffic brought goods up the estuary.
In 1863, New Zealand’s first railway was established, running from Ferrymead into central Christchurch. This historic railway inspired the creation of Ferrymead Heritage Park, and today, a restored railway follows part of the original route.
